I am Michala Heaton, an artist and designer based in the city of Exeter in Devon.
I created Steamwork Designs back in 2012 when I wanted to start a business producing pieces that have been remade from unused, or unappreciated items, destined for the scrap heap. Here I am! Working with beautiful antique or vintage watch, clock, or mechanical components. This is my way of bringing recycling or ‘upcycling’ into the fashion and jewellery industry and helping the planet at the same time! This is a passion, and it means I can create a range of unique and bespoke accessories, especially for customers who are looking for something that little bit different, to a world wide customer base. I am also very pleased to have a new range of gents accessories available for the man who has everything!
I studied fine art at Bath School of Art and Design, and have exhibited in various locations across the UK, including The Old Truman Brewery Gallery in Brick Lane, London. I was also shortlisted for the Kenneth Armitage Young Sculptor Prize in 2011. My years of designing and selling experience in the jewellery industry, and achieving a Professional Jewellers’ Diploma in 2017, all influence my love of fine craftsmanship and micro engineering.
